Is the final product more important than the design and production process?

Which is more important?

Design, production quality or the final product? Personally, I cannot put one above the other. I find that each step when creating something is just as important as the one before and the next.

Let's say that the final product is prioritised, it would be detrimental to a good quality design and process. This does not create a good product but it is final and complete.

On the other hand, if we prioritise good quality design and process, the project may never finish as we are always trying to go further with our ideas. Resulting in a good product but not something that can be streamlined into production.

However, this is only my opinion. Many of the scholars I researched seemed to highlight the importance of design and production over the final product. For example, Mau (2014) who claims:

“To say that the end result is what counts is just not true… Rather, a good designer is more concerned with the process; that winding, potholed road he embarks upon.”

This is evident in his third point:

Many discussions that I saw were related to architecture and programming. One response in particular sparked my interest. It was in a blog called “Process is more important than product” by TheHiddenStep, where 'Chatter of Clouds' (2009) commented:

"Assigning more importance to process over product is akin, though not exactly the same as, assigning more importance to cause over effect"

After reading this thought, I completely agree. Yet, I still believe that design and process are paramount to create a good quality product but I believe that the final result does not fully represent all the “blood, sweat and tears” that goes into it.

Relating this to education, we should teach students design and processes especially in relation to scientific research and critical evaluation, which we actually are. However, we as teachers should also implement this process into our lesson planning creating the best learning environment and lessons for these children.
