-How changes in technology impact the way humans communicate, and the ethical issues that surround these changes-

This blog is a rewrite of my third blog "How changes in technology impact the way humans communicate, and the ethical issues that surround these changes". This is the comment that prompted my rewrite and that I based my critiques on. I chose to use Emily’s comment to aid my rewrite.

This blog addresses how technology impacts human communication, discussing its impacts, ethics and footprint on education.

We’ve all heard the question, ‘could you go without your phone for a day?’ but let's really think. Communication technology is so intertwined in our life that it’s hard to list all the repercussions of its removal, challenging how we function both socially and mentally.

Technology impacts not only the way humans communicate but how we intrinsically approach the thought of communication. It’s become habit to use technology as an extension of our own abilities.

Wong (2016) further expands on this stating;

“The nature of communication has changed along with its increase in speed and volume. Mobile devices that fit in our pockets ... increase in the use of shortcuts, symbols, abbreviations, and new words that get the point across with fewer characters.”

Technology has encouraged social change, prompting discussions among its users. As JaguarPC (2014) claims:

“Many people look at technology through a negative set of eyes, there are many ways in which it plays a positive role in our lives.”

especially for communication.

Technological advancements in optical fibres, satellites, social media and data processing allow for almost instantaneous global communication. Consequently, prompting ethical discourse surrounding the fear of privacy, cyber bullying, hacking and fraud, especially in schools. Thus, it’s imperative to teach children how to appropriately use technology.

When comparing how children approach situations and think critically compared to parents, we can't deny the impact of introducing technology in schools. As teachers we must consider this when composing lessons and incorporating technology into the classroom.

Google Classroom is one application prominent in many schools across Australia. Teachers use programs like this to assign homework, notify students and parents of upcoming events and much more. This allows the exchange of feedback at all times which is beneficial for students, strengthening and promoting learning through games and technologies outside of school.

Conclusively, as teachers we need to be aware and acknowledge the ethical issues surrounding the impacts of communication technology. Yet we cannot hinder its use in schools, as technology encourages consistent communication between teachers, students and parents enhancing the educational environment.
